Royal Flush or Pair of Tens?

Carol Dweck Ph. D. of Stanford University is renowned for her research into mindset. Dweck says when we believe our qualities are cast in stone (fixed mindset) we spend all our lives trying to prove ourselves. Always trying to convince ourselves and others that we have a royal flush when we’re secretly worried it’s a pair of tens. But there’s another approach (growth mindset) in which the hand we’re dealt is just the starting point for development.”

Writing in her book Mindset, Dweck says: “In a fixed mindset, people believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits. They spend their time documenting their intelligence or talent instead of developing them. They also believe that talent alone creates success – without effort.

“In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work – brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment. Virtually all great people have had these qualities.”

So, what do you reckon, stick or twist?
