Creating Stillness
They wondered how, by sitting or standing in a single posture without moving, can you improve health?1
Health can be a challenge for most of us, if we want to enjoy growing older with a drug free life. Structured Standing (Zhan Zhuang 站樁)is a method to understanding your own health. How standing in a structured posture brings about these insights is simple and quite profound.
Our lives are often busy, either through physical demands of daily chores or mental anguish that occupies our whole being reducing the ability to remain in the moment.
In practicing the exercise of standing without moving, we can increase physical strength & awaken healing processes within the body, allowing the body to cure itself of all kinds of chronic diseases it might have accumulated during a lifetime. 3
Using the Five Element standing postures developed by Dr Yu and brought to Europe by Master Lam Kam Chuen, (image to right shows Wu Chi, Metal, Fire, Water, Wood as a full circle of training), you are able to understand the fundamental forces of energy. When you practice in this way, with the full intention of spirit, not only will your whole body and mind be synchronised, but you will have the feeling of Heaven and Earth fused together through you as if standing like a tree. 4
The energy from Heaven and Earth combine in the body with nourishment from food to form true chi. The movement of this true chi in the body supports all of life’s activities, forming a union between humanity and nature. 5
Remember when practicing about alignment of posture, relaxed breathing and your intention to allow openness of body and mind. Practice for two minutes in each posture, but to start with only do postures one and two for a minimum of three months to bu
Be present when performing standing exercises, so the time you spend in a posture has maximum results in moving chi and managing your health. It is only through regular daily practice that the benefits of structured standing will become evident and the power of being still adds value to your life.
Principles of Structured Standing to have in your consciousness.
- Weight spread evenly on both feet, 60/40 toe/heel, hip width apart.
- Knees bent, tail bone tucked, spine lengthen from the top of the head.
- Natural breath, tension release scanning of the posture, throughout practice
- Elbows drawn away from the body, space under the armpit, hands/fingers without tension.
- Eyes open, attention scanning the body and remaining present.
- Don’t rush, quality over quantity of practice.
Anything you experience when doing practice, is energy moving and being brought to the conscious mind. Allow the flow to happen, enjoying the ride.
